Fforest Cwm is set amidst hills and fields, once part of the famous Baskerville Estate. It was, until relatively recently, a mixed farm with cattle, pigs and sheep but in the last twenty years the owners' smallholding has been home to horses, hens and ducks, sheep, dogs and cats. The byre was used to house cattle for around two hundred years whilst the present owners used it for their herd of milking goats!

It has been restored sympathetically with a wealth of oak timbers and with flagged floors throughout. We've used Fired Earth paints and tiles and Jim Lawrence for lights and door fittings, rugs and soft furnishings. The Welsh oak kitchen, hand built by a local craftsman, is small but well equipped with a granite sink and worktops, fridge, electric oven and ceramic hob. The cosy bathroom has shower, heated towel rail, washbasin and toilet.

The bedroom has a hand made Welsh walnut bed and a comfortable organic cotton and wool mattress with Welsh-wool duvet. There is ample storage here as well as a beautiful oak wardrobe, again made from local timbers. All linen and towels are, of course, provided throughout your stay as well as Arran Aromatics for a taste of luxury.

The large, beamed and comfortably furnished living room, with log burning stove, links to the superb oak framed garden room overlooking the patio and pastures. From here you can watch the local birdlife, including red kites, buzzards, woodpeckers and huge numbers of finches and tits. Bird food will also be provided throughout your visit as well as binoculars so that you can enjoy their company from the comfort of the garden room! French doors lead onto the patio with garden furniture and a barbecue on hand for those long, sunny days. Should the weather prove to be disappointing, a TV, DVD player, games and books will be on hand for you to curl up on the sofa. Broadband connection/ wifi is available- but mobile phone coverage can be patchy;remember that things move a little more slowly here! At night, the dark skies ensure that stargazers will not be disappointed.

Outside, there is ample parking and a shed for wet clothing or muddy boots. The owners can provide a laundry service if required as well as a wealth of advice on good walks, cycling, horse riding, fishing, kayaking or simply visiting the unique town of Hay and its wonderful shops and pubs. We are also near Offa's Dyke and can provide a free pick up service for those on foot. There is storage for bikes and eventually we hope to provide stabling for two horses!

The Byre is centrally heated throughout and logs for the woodburner are provided free of charge. A welcome pack (with home made bread and preserves, our own eggs, Welsh butter, tea, fruitjuice, coffee and local bacon) will be ready for you as well as basic essentials, such as olive oil, flour, rice, some cereals and loo roll. We grow organic vegetables so can supply you with some delicious home-grown carrots, salads, herbs and potatoes when in season. Clyro post office sells newspapers and a wide variety of magazines as well as catering for every day needs. There is a farm shop only 10 minutes drive away whilst Hay, of course, has the full range of independent shops loved by locals and visitors alike. We look forward to welcoming you to our home. Tea and home-made cake awaits!

Sorry - we cannot take pets. The Byre has no smoking.
